Domain Renewal & Expiry Policy
This policy explains how domain renewals, expiry reminders, protected periods, suspension, redemption and deletion are handled for domain names managed by WEBS Ltd.
1. Introduction
Domain names are registered for fixed periods and must be renewed if you wish to continue using them. Renewal requirements, grace periods, redemption periods and deletion rules vary depending on the domain extension and the relevant registry or registrar.
We will make reasonable efforts to remind customers about upcoming domain expiries, but it remains the customer’s responsibility to ensure that domain names are renewed on time and that contact and payment details are accurate and up to date.
2. Renewal reminders
For ICANN-sponsored domain names, such as .com, .net, .org and similar extensions, we may send renewal reminders before expiry. These reminders may include notices approximately 30 days, 14 days, 7 days and 1 day before expiry, with a further reminder after expiry where applicable.
Renewal reminders will normally be sent to the email address recorded against the customer account and/or domain registration. If your email address is incorrect, outdated, inaccessible or filtered as spam, you may not receive these reminders.
3. .uk domain renewal policy
.uk domain names can usually be registered for a period of 1 to 10 years. For .uk domains, we may send reminder emails approximately 60 days, 30 days, 7 days and 2 days before the expiry date.
These reminders are sent to the email address held on the customer account. It is your responsibility to ensure your account details and contact information are correct.
If you do not wish to renew a domain and it is not set to auto-renew, you may allow the domain to lapse. If you wish to renew, you should do so before the expiry date wherever possible.
4. Manual renewal
You can manually renew eligible domain names through your customer account, subject to the domain’s status, registry rules and payment of the applicable renewal fee.
We recommend renewing domain names well before their expiry date to avoid website downtime, email disruption, DNS interruption, redemption fees or permanent loss of the domain.
5. Auto-renewal
Where auto-renewal is available, you may be able to configure a domain name to renew automatically. Auto-renewal requires a valid payment method and sufficient authority for us to take payment.
If we are unable to take payment, the domain may not renew. We are not responsible for a failed auto-renewal caused by an expired card, declined payment, missing payment method, incorrect billing details, bank refusal, customer account issue or similar payment failure.
6. Expired domain names
If a domain is not renewed by its expiry date, the domain may stop working. This can affect websites, email, DNS, SSL certificates, third-party services and any other service that relies on the domain.
After expiry, the domain may enter one or more grace, suspension, redemption or deletion stages depending on the domain extension and registry rules.
7. Grace periods
Some domain extensions provide a grace period after expiry during which the domain can still be renewed. Grace periods are not guaranteed and may vary by extension, registrar and registry.
For .uk domain names, there is normally a protected period after expiry during which the domain can be renewed. If the domain is not renewed within the applicable period, it may be suspended, enter a grace period, be cancelled, deleted and eventually become available for registration by another party.
8. DNS interruption and suspension
Once a domain has expired, DNS resolution may be interrupted. This means that the domain may no longer point to your website, email or other services. In some cases, web traffic may be redirected to an expiry notice or holding page.
If the domain is renewed after suspension or DNS interruption, we will make reasonable efforts to restore the previous DNS settings where possible. DNS propagation times and registry processing times may delay full restoration.
9. Redemption periods and fees
Some expired domains may enter a redemption period after deletion or suspension. During this stage, restoration may still be possible, but additional redemption or restore fees may apply.
Redemption fees vary depending on the domain extension, registry, registrar and timing of the request. Any redemption, restore or renewal fees must be paid before we can attempt recovery.
For .uk domain names, domains may be recoverable during the applicable post-expiry period, subject to Nominet rules and payment of any applicable renewal or recovery fees.
10. Deletion and loss of domain
If a domain is not renewed or restored within the applicable period, it may be deleted by the registry and made available for registration by another party.
Once a domain has been deleted or registered by another party, we may be unable to recover it. We are not responsible for loss of a domain caused by non-renewal, failed payment, incorrect contact details, customer inaction or expiry.
11. Disputed domain names
If a domain name is subject to a dispute process, legal process or registry investigation, renewal, transfer, suspension or deletion may be affected by the rules of the relevant dispute body, registry, registrar or court.
12. Contact
If you are unsure whether a domain is due for renewal, has expired or may be at risk of deletion, please contact us as soon as possible or check your customer account.
